Thom’s instructional experience is extensive and varied. Over the past ten years he has given percussion, improvisation, ensemble and business of music master-classes to both high schools and post-secondary institutions across Alberta. As past visiting Professor of Percussion at Keyano College Thom taught both Percussion Performance Majors as well as Conservatory students. He’s adjudicated festivals such as Jazzworks and the Fort McMurray High School Jazz Festival and he’s maintained a consistent teaching practice at his home studio for the past 15 years. Thom was listed on renowned percussion educator Dom Famularo’s worlds best teachers list for 2015.
In the past few years Thom’s adjudicating skills have also been put to use more frequently. Most notably at the Edmonton Jazz Society’s JazzWorks in 2008 with Brad Turner, Bobby Cairns and Mark DeJong and at the Keyano College Jazz Fest in 2009 with Mike Downes, Bill Coon, Brian O’Kane and Bill Prouten.
Thom is also regularly contracted by various schools in the Edmonton Public School system as a clinician and instructor in order to work with junior and senior high school students, individually, sectionally and as a whole.
“Thom has been working with my students on rhythm for the past few months. He has brought innovative new ideas that have helped our rhythm and brought a new perspective to students and myself!”
“I was very pleased to find a competent percussion teacher for our daughter. After many attempts at music lessons and instructors we finally found someone who could provide both written and verbal theory so that there could be practice at home and worthwhile instruction during the lessons. His experience definitely shows.”
